Royston Stress Centre Ltd Board of Directors

Royston Stress centre LTD owes its existence to the hard work and determination of local people, who felt strongly that there should be alternatives to a purely medical approach available to people in the community who were experiencing high levels of stress. While they recognised that in some cases medication was necessary and could be helpful in the short term, that in the longer term it did not assist people to deal with the living circumstances and problems that were creating the stress. They looked to holistic and complimentary therapies and an approach to working in partnership with and supporting people to assist them to regain control, deal more effectively with their stress and their problems along with making choices in that would help them move forward in their lives.

As part of our organisation’s commitment to community development we invest time and resources in continuing to involve local people and service users in the management and development of the organisation and its projects. The following testimonies provide an overview of the process of moving from being a service user to a Director on the Board and what the individuals gained from the experience of both.

Board Memeber Testimonies

I have been attending Royston (Adult) Stress Centre off and on for a good few years. When I first attended the Centre, I was a nervous wreck.

At different times I have had counselling, reiki, acupuncture and massage. Having this treatment has built up my confidence and given me my independence and self worth back. I am now a Board Member for the Stress Centre, I would not have been able to do this a few years ago, but with all the help I have received from staff at RSC, I have come on leaps and bounds.

Before I received any treatment, I had attempted suicide because of all my family problems. The centre has saved my sanity and also my life. The staff have done a great job; they put you at ease and are also very friendly and helpful, so I suppose you could say that I am a success story.

Thank God.

I first approached the Centre when my local health visitor recommended that I come along to seek help with the stressful situation I was experiencing. I was finding it extremely difficult to sleep and my self esteem was at an all time low. I was reluctant to approach the centre as I didn’t really want anyone to know what I was going through. Anyway I made an appointment and 6 weeks later started to receive massage. Eventually I realised through the body work that I really did need to talk about my situation. The counselling sessions ‘opened a can of worms’ and I began to deal with the cracks in the relationship that had been there for some time.

At this point I discovered I was pregnant again and I now felt suicidal. The support I received at this point from RSC became invaluable and gave me the strength to leave the relationship which was by now intolerable.

The Centre helped me to regain my self esteem/confidence and to realise that I had choices that could help me to move on in my life.
I was given tenancy of a house in another area and began a new life with my kids. I wanted to give something back to the Centre for the help that they had given me and I was invited to attend a Board meeting with the view to becoming a Director of the Board of Management. I have been on the Board now for a few years and have undertaken several areas of training which has enabled me to become a valuable member within the stress centre and to go back into education, which I didn’t complete at school.

From the start of RSC I was involved. I was going through a nervous breakdown at that time as I was trying to come off prescribed tranquillizers and felt strongly there was a need for something other than just pills, doctors and psychiatrist.

It was hard going at first as I had to learn that to get better I had to try to help myself. The centre made me think of my own well-being and supported in every way. My family also benefited as they saw the change in me for the better. At the present moment I am Chairperson of Board of Directors and help run the organisation. All the training I have received for this position has also has helped in my own personal life.
